Symbols and Metaphors

Water- Life. People risk their lives to obtain this essential source. Kenan travels over a dangerous bridge and navigates the bombardment of his neighbourhood to get water so his family can carry out the activities of life, like cooking, cleaning, drinking and washing. Kenan also risks his life to get water for his neighbour

Water bottles- are a sign of Keenan’s bravery and loyalty to his family, persistence, as well as his faith that his city will be healed. His strength of character and humanity.
Cello (music) -Hope and humanity in the chaotic city of Sarajevo. The cellist serves to connect the three mostly separate stories. Arrow encounters him the most as she is assigned to keep him alive. When she hears his playing, she remembers her childhood and playing with her mother. Kenan hears the Adagio and thinks ahead to when he can buy his children some yummy ice cream. Dragan hears the cellist and thinks more positively about the present situation in Sarajevo.
Cigarettes: The difference between Ismet and the man in the track suit's stash of cigarettes. Though they both smoke, they smoke for different reasons and the means by how they acquire their smokes are very different. Ismet gets the cigarettes as a form of payment from the army while the man in the track suit buys his own from money he got from profiteering.
Arrow: very precise, is designed for a clean shot. She is an arrow, ready to be shot. The bow is her will, commander, and need to protect the cellist.
Dragan: Refuses to leave his city, stays to protect it, like a dragon does to its possession. It’s a creature known for defending and protecting.
